What it's for

Home Assistant is the brain of the house. It ties together the lights, climate, sensors, media players, cameras, and everything else into one place you can see and control. Use it to check the state of the home at a glance, flip things on and off, run scenes, and let automations handle the routine stuff for you. Anyone in the household can use the dashboards; deeper changes (adding devices, editing automations) are the admin's job.

Getting in

  • Open: https://ha.fmm.house — on the home Wi-Fi/LAN, or from anywhere with Tailscale connected.
  • Sign in: Home Assistant has its own user accounts. Ask the admin to create one for you; then log in with your username and password.

How to use it

Dashboards and tiles

The main view is a dashboard made of cards and tiles. Each tile shows a device or sensor — a light, a thermostat, a temperature reading. Tap a tile to toggle it; tap and hold (or click the tile's name/icon) to open its detail dialog with sliders, color, and history.

Controlling devices

From a device's detail dialog you can do the full range: dim and color lights, set a thermostat target, start or stop a media player, lock a door. Changes take effect immediately.

Areas and rooms

Devices are grouped into Areas (Living Room, Kitchen, Bedroom…). Browsing by area is the quickest way to find "that light" or see everything in one room at once.

Scenes and automations

  • Scenes set several devices to a saved state at once — e.g. a "Movie" scene that dims the lights and closes the blinds. Run one from its tile or a button on the dashboard.
  • Automations run on their own when a trigger happens (sunset, motion, someone arriving). You can usually toggle an automation on/off, and the admin edits them under Settings → Automations.

The companion mobile app

Install the Home Assistant app (iOS/Android), then point it at https://ha.fmm.house and sign in. The app adds two big things a browser can't: - Location — presence detection so automations know when you're home or away. - Notifications — push alerts from automations (doorbell, laundry done, an alarm).

Voice

If Assist is set up, tap the microphone icon (top-right of the app or dashboard) and speak, or type a command like "turn off the kitchen lights." You can also trigger it from a linked voice satellite or speaker.

Tips

Tip

Add the companion app to your phone even if you mostly use the browser — location-based automations and push notifications only work through it.

  • Long-press almost any tile to see its recent history graph — handy for "is the heat actually running?"
  • If a device looks stuck or "unavailable," it's usually the device or its integration, not your account — flag it to the admin rather than making a new login.
