What it's for

Music Assistant pulls your music — local files and streaming services — into one library and plays it to the speakers and players around the house. It handles multi-room (play the same thing everywhere, or different things in different rooms) and plugs straight into Home Assistant so your media players and automations can use it. Anyone in the household can queue up music from the web UI or from a Home Assistant dashboard.

Getting in

  • Open: https://ma.fmm.house — on the home Wi-Fi/LAN, or from anywhere with Tailscale connected.
  • Sign in: Music Assistant is typically open on the home network without a personal login. If it asks for anything, check with the admin.

How to use it

Add music providers

Providers are where your music comes from. Under Settings → Providers you can add streaming services (Spotify, Tidal, YouTube Music, and others) and local sources. Once a provider is connected, its catalog and your playlists show up in the library. Adding providers is usually an admin task.

Browse the library

The Library brings everything together — Artists, Albums, Tracks, Playlists, and Radio — across all providers at once. Search finds a song no matter which service it lives on.

Pick a player and play

Players are your output devices (a smart speaker, a Chromecast, an HA media player). Pick one from the player selector (usually bottom of the screen), then hit play on any track, album, or playlist. Use the queue to line up what plays next or see what's coming.

Multi-room / grouping

To play in sync across rooms, group players together — add players to a group and they share one queue and stay in sync. Ungroup to send different music to different rooms again. Each player still has its own volume within the group.

Control it from Home Assistant

Music Assistant appears in Home Assistant as media players. That means you can put a media card on an HA dashboard, control playback there, and use music in automations (e.g. "play morning playlist in the kitchen at 7am") and voice commands.

Tips

Tip

Always confirm which player is selected before pressing play — it's the usual reason music comes out of the "wrong" room.

  • Grouped players share a single queue; change the track once and it changes everywhere in the group.
  • Streaming providers need their own account/subscription — Music Assistant plays through them, it doesn't replace them.
